Hospice of Palm Beach County provides services to children as patients, as family members of patients and those from the community who are dealing with grief and loss issues after the death of a loved one, even when their loved one was not one of our patients. Music Therapy is often used to help children express and understand their concerns, questions, feelings, hopes and fears.
Hospice of Palm Beach County has always cared for pediatric patients and was selected as one of eight sites in the state to pilot a program for pediatric patients who are very seriously ill to ensure that they and their families receive the support and care they need.
Although federal funding has not been released to fully implement this program as officially outlined, Hospice of Palm Beach County continues to provide pediatric hospice care. In so doing, the organization coordinates with other pediatric services in the county to provide the best possible care and resources for these children.
For bereaved children, the John J. Brogan Horizons Bereavement Center offers individual counseling, children's groups and family counseling. Camp SeaStar is an annual camp for grieving children and teens who are dealing with the death of a loved one. The children's bereavement programs are open to the community, and support groups are held in area schools.
Additional loss-specific bereavement services are SHARE, for infant and pregnancy loss, a follow-up group for parents who are pregnant after a loss of planned pregnancy, and a sudden loss group. Hospice of Palm Beach County received national recognition for SHARE and is the host site for the Christmas Box Angel Statue for the State of Florida. Counseling is provided to parents, grandparents, and siblings for the death of a child through miscarriage, stillbirth or infant.
